20 WORLD-CLASS HORSEMEN, 40 UN-STARTED HORSES AND SIX DAYS OF REAL HORSEMANSHIP
If you wanted to see good cowboys ride bucking stock or rope, you would go to a rodeo. If you wanted to see good horse trainers, you would go to a horse show. If you want to see good hands starting horses, you might go to a clinic, a horse expo, or watch horse trainers on DVD or television. However, you might just be watching good showmanship or salesmanship, not necessarily true horsemanship.
Being an entertainer doesn’t necessarily make someone a good horseman or a good hand at starting young horses. There are many good hands starting colts behind the scenes, under the radar on remote ranches where nobody sees or hears about them.
Wouldn’t it be fascinating to bring some of these talented horsemen together with the world renowned names in one place, at one time, for the public to watch them start young horses just like they would at home? We’re not talking about working one horse for three or four hours, but rather transforming a herd of 40 unstarted horses, into a group of young saddle horses, ready to do ranch work or competitive events. By this, we mean you will be able to witness every aspect of these young horses being started. From the first time they are saddled, to their progression into being able to do a job. Some of the horsemen will be exhibiting cow horse, cattle working, roping and ranch branding demonstrations by the end of the event as well.
This type of authentic western horsemanship is what Rowly and Cathie Twisselman, owners of the Madonna Inn Quarter Horses in Southern California, and horsemanship clinicians, Chris Cox and Martin Black have organized. They call this new and unique event, THE HORSEMEN’S RE-UNION. This one-of-a-kind assembly of top hands will be held April 2-7, 2012 at the California Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California. 20 skilled horsemen, a mix of well-known clinicians, professional horsemen and ranch cowboys, will start 40 head of two year and three year old horses over six days. At no other event, anywhere in the world, has the public witnessed this many horses being started by more top horsemen in one place, at one time, all working without the pressure of the clock or a prestigious title.
The sixth and final day will conclude with a Grand Finale/Sale Preview and a First Ever Horsemen’s Re-Union Horse Sale where many of the horses that were started at this event will be offered to the public at auction. Also, the horsemen have been offered spots to sell some of their own personal, more experienced mounts to be consigned to this one of a kind, prestigious sale.
Horsemen will be coming from six states and four nations. Chris Cox, Pat Parelli, Joe Wolter, Bryan Neubert, Jimmy Neubert, Luke Neubert, Martin Black, Wade Black, Ty Van Norman, Thomas Saunders V, Clayton Anderson, Frank Dominguez and Ed Robertson all from the United States; Sid Cook, Mike Sears and Blake Schlosser all from Canada; Antoine Cloux from Switzerland; Rob Leach and Ron Wall from Australia, have all confirmed their participation.
These horsemen will volunteer their time and talent for the camaraderie and the chance to participate with the most diverse group of their peers ever assembled. They won’t be judged or timed and no awards will be given. The only rule is to keep riders and horses safe. The event producers and horseman have all agreed to share the risk of their own investments of time and money in an effort to provide an educational horsemanship opportunity like that of no other.
Besides great displays of horsemanship and colt starting during the day, there will also be a Horsemen’s & Sponsor’s Trade Show followed by evenings of entertainment featuring autograph sessions and round-table discussions with the horsemen. There will be Chuck-Wagon Cook-Offs and Wine Tasting from various local wineries. There will be Cowboy Poetry and Country Music from some very famous and some new, exciting up and coming stars.
Along with this, we will also be posting updates with new, “surprise” demonstrations that will be happening along with our great Horsemen’s Re-Union lineup. So be sure to check our website regularly so you don’t miss anything. This event is already proving to be a one of a kind venue that has surpassed our highest expectations.
Don’t miss out! Be a part of the…

The 2012 AHP Internship Handbook and applications are now available online at www.americanhorsepubs.org/students/internship_program/index.asp to college students who have an interest in horses and seek a career in equine publishing media.
The AHP Internship Program is a great way to provide students with the resume-building experience that’s so critical to today’s job market. Interns gain valuable hands-on real life experience and AHP members acquire additional help when and where they need it most.
AHP is the nation’s only non-profit professional association of over 450 members dedicated to promoting better understanding and cooperation within the equine publishing industry. Membership consists primarily of equine-related print publications and electronic media as well as individuals, businesses and organizations serving the equine industry.
AHP serves as the umbrella organization for the internship program and is responsible for creating the application process, providing the forms, the mailing list, and a directory of the participating AHP member publications and businesses. The Internship Handbook includes program guidelines, expectations and responsibilities of the intern and the AHP participating member, and a directory of AHP participants. Each listing includes thepublication or company name, a brief description, types of internships offered, availability/duration, requirements, information on compensation and housing, and contact information. Students apply directly to the AHP member, who will choose the applicants that best meet their needs. AHP members may hire more than one intern.
American Horse Publications also offers students wishing to become involved in the equine publishing an opportunity to join the association and participate in other student programs.
Student Membership is open to high school, college, and graduate students for an annual fee of $25. Student Members receive an opportunity to attend the AHP annual seminar at a reduced registration fee, a free listing in the online AHP Membership Directory, the AHP monthly e-newsletter,“AHP For the record,” and are eligible to enter several classes in the AHP annual Awards Contest. 2012 HORSE EXPO AT POMONA, CALIFORNIA
Horse enthusiasts will be thrilled to know that Horse Expo Events is presenting a brand new and exciting expo in Pomona, California on February 2-4, 2012 (Thursday, Friday, Saturday) at the Fairplex, southern California’s event and entertainment center and home of the Los Angeles County Fair.
“Our team’s enthusiasm for this new event is really awesome,” says event founder Miki Cohen. “We’re going to have a festive, attendee-involved expo, with a huge variety of outdoor exhibits and performances, and of course buildings full of vendors to satisfy the shopping desires of all horse owners. The whole environment will be energetic and entertaining, highlighted by horses everywhere. And one of the first decisions we made was to have this three-day show on Thursday, Friday and Saturday so everyone can stay home and enjoy Super Bowl Sunday!
“It’s fairly obvious to the horse world that we’re holding this expo on the same dates as Equine Affaire has for a decade,” comments Cohen. “As most people know, Equine Affaire has decided to not hold their event in California any longer. We certainly honor everything Equine Affaire has done for horse lovers over the years, and our hat is off to Eugenia Snyder and the Equine Affaire staff for their event at this location. I am so pleased that Horse Expo Pomona will continue to bring the finest education and entertainment to the horse-loving crowd that has consistently flocked to Pomona.”
This recent business decision has kicked the Horse Expo Events team into high gear — nothing new to this dynamic group that also presents the Western States Horse Expo in Sacramento each year for the past 13 years. The walls of the Horse Expo office are plastered with charts for clinician suggestions, vendor reservations, media plans, entertainment ideas, breed presentations, competition possibilities — all the ingredients that will make this new event a stunning success. “We’re hitting the ground running!” laughs Cohen.
“Horse people are always anxious for new information about training and riding their horses, along with education about horse health, tack, boarding, safety — you name it. It’s our goal to present as many educational topics and varieties of performances and demonstrations as possible. This is going be fun!,” comments Cohen.
The list of clinicians, daily program and vendors is far from being complete, but the event’s website http://www.horseexpoevents.com/ is just about ready to be launched (keep checking!) and will be updated on a regular basis to keep people informed and enthused about this expo. For more information about vendor space and participation, call 800.352.2411. For media information, contact Kate Riordan at 530.333.2002, irishkate@prodigy.net.

American Horse Publications Launches its Second Equine Industry Survey
AHP Releases Additional Data on Ways Horse Owners Use their Horses
MARCH 5, 2012 – The American Horse Publications (AHP) is launching its second Equine Industry Survey to gauge trends in the U.S. equine industry. The AHP Equine Industry Survey is being sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research, Merck Animal Health, and Pfizer Animal Health.
In 2009, AHP conducted an online nationwide survey made possible by the sponsorship of Intervet/Schering Plough Animal Health and Pfizer Animal Health. Upon its conclusion on Jan. 31, 2010, a total of 11,171 usable responses was collected. This completed the largest-ever equine industry survey of hands-on horse industry participants in the United States.1 AHP will strive to exceed that number with the current survey.
As in the previous survey, the purpose of the 2012 survey is threefold. The first objective is to obtain information regarding past, present, and expected future participation in the equine industry. The second objective is to identify which issues currently facing the equine industry are perceived as being most critical to those who own, or manage horses. The third objective is to analyze issues pertaining to horse health. In addition to questions on vaccines and deworming, the 2012 survey includes questions relating to nutrition, feed, and nutritional supplements.
Those eligible to participate in the survey are men and women, 18 years of age and older, who currently own or manage at least one horse and live in the United States. This study is anonymous; this means that no one–not even members of the research team–will be able to associate information that is given with responses. When the survey results are tallied, only aggregated results will be presented.
AHP members who have publications, websites, social media outlets, and professional organizations in the equine industry will promote the survey to their communities of horse owners for several months. AHP members who participate in promoting the survey will receive the complete results of the 2012 survey to release through their own channels. Full survey results will be released to the general equine industry 30 days after that.
To show the type of important information AHP collected in the first survey, following is new data from the 2009-2010 AHP Equine Industry Survey on how horse owners use their horses. These responses have been broken down by geographic region and discipline. Within each region, the most popular use of horses is for pleasure or trail riding. It is also the most popular activity nationwide. After pleasure or trail riding, the top 5 most frequently reported activities in each region are identified.
To download the results of the 2009 AHP Results Discipline by Region Table, click on the link below.
http://www.americanhorsepubs.org/resources/2009-AHP-Results-Discipline-By-Region-Table.xls
AHP members and survey sponsors receive a complete set of these results. The general equine industry may request a copy of this new information by contacting the AHP office at ahorsepubs@aol.com after April 1, 2012. Data will be available online at www.americanhorsepubs.orgat that time.
To take the 2012 AHP Equine Industry Survey, go to www.horsesurvey2012.com
Please pass this link around to every horse-owning group and individual.
The survey closes May 15, 2012.
The 2012 AHP Equine Industry Survey is being conducted by American Horse Publications (AHP). AHP is a nonprofit association that promotes excellence in equine media; Its members include equine-related publications, digital media, professionals, students, organizations and businesses. Dr. C. Jill Stowe is providing consulting services for data collection and analysis to the AHP; Dr. Stowe is currently an assistant professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Kentucky. The survey is sponsored by Kentucky Equine Research, Merck Animal Health, and Pfizer Animal Health.
[1] The 1995 NAHMS survey collected responses from 3,349 operations, and the 1998 NAHMS survey collected responses from 2,904 operations. The 2008-2009 American Horse Council Unwanted Horse Survey collected responses from over 23,000 horse owners, non-horse owners, and equine industry stakeholders.

Art and Science Come Together to Help Document Various Wild Horse Cultures
“This DVD will delight both horse lover and professional horseman with beautiful photographs, inspiring music and simple science about the social ecology of horses.”
Wild Horses: Understanding the Natural Lives of Horses, DVD, 30 mins
Wild Horse Ecologist, Mary Ann Simonds and Wildlife photographers Barbara and Marty Wheeler recently teamed up to document the behaviors of various wild horse herds. ”Having spent a lifetime studying wild horse ecology & ethology, as a scientist I have made very little impact on overall protection and management of wild horses. Even being on the National Advisory Board for Wild Horses and Burros in the early 90s, we only were able to create more public involvement, but nothing on the management side changed. Internationally, most wild equids are either threatened or endangered and we are losing functional horse culture. Barbara and Marty Wheeler had captured many behaviors not often photographed that I was looking for to update my lectures, commented Mary Ann Simonds. “So rather than just do a scientific presentation we decided to do an “edu-tainment” piece using Diane Arkenstone’s (http://www.dianearkenstone.
Barbara & Marty Wheeler have documented herds in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, Montana & Wyoming with thousands of pictures. Barbara states, “Working with Mary Ann has increased our knowledge and awareness about wild horse culture, social behavior and relationships. That increased knowledge has enhanced our experience as photographers. We have been able to pass the knowledge on to our audience, helping them to better understand and appreciate wild horses. Marty and I are very pleased to be sharing our photographs with others and thrilled to be working with Mary Ann Simonds on this project.”
The information is suitable for all equine enthusiasts of all levels, but is equally suitable to be taught as an environmental education module from 5th grade upwards. As social mammals, viewers may find that equine needs of feeling safe and having their family and friends around them are not so different from human needs. The similarities and differences of various herd personalities and cultures give the viewer insight and understanding that most horsemen have never seen. We hope people will not only enjoy this lovely musical journey, but we hope they will feel more deeply connected with their equine friends.
Proceeds from the sale of the dvd will fund continued efforts to identify and document functional social behaviors of various herds in North America.
The dvd is available at www.wildhorsesdvd.com.
Mary Ann Simonds, MA is an applied equine ecologist/ethologist who has been studying wild horses since 1973 when her undergraduate research in wild horse ecology and range management was used at the University of Wyoming in setting guidelines for wild horse management. She has spent a lifetime trying to educate people on natural equine behaviors and sustainable wild equid management serving on state and National Advisory Boards to the BLM since 1983. She is now focused on creating a data base of equine behavior and documenting the remaining wild horse cultures. You can learn more about Mary Ann’s work at www.maryannsimonds.com
Barbara and Marty Wheeler are professional wildlife photographers and have been photographing wild horses for over 10 years and have thousands of photographs. They are working with Mary Ann to document the various herd cultures. They are currently back in the field visiting various herds in the Western states. You can see more work at www.

Award Recognizes Selflessness of Hoof-Care Professionals
Do you know a farrier or equine veterinarian who performs much-needed hoof-care work for a therapeutic riding center without charge? Maybe someone who provides free footcare clinics for 4-H Club youngsters or works closely with local Pony Club members? If so, here is your opportunity to celebrate this person’s volunteerism.
To recognize the dedication and volunteer efforts among hoof-care professionals, the Delta Mustad Hoofcare Center and American Farriers Journal are again sponsoring the “Summit Achievement Award.” Started in 2009, this award honors members of the hoof-care community who have freely given their time and expertise to help horse owners and groups in need of assistance.
“The Summit Achievement Award is the pinnacle of recognition for farriers contributing their time and talents back to the equine industry,” says Glenn Hause, Director of North American Marketing. “The award represents the hallmarks we embrace as part of our mission statement and core values as a company.”
The 2012 award winner will receive $2,000 to use toward future volunteer efforts, as well as free registration and travel expenses to next winter’s International Hoof-Care Summit being held from January 31 to February 3, 2012, in Cincinnati, Ohio. During a ceremony at the Summit, a plaque will be presented to the winner and also to the group for which the volunteered services were provided.
Previous winners of the Summit Achievement Award include:
Bob Smith, Plymouth, California, 2009.
Margie Lee of Palo Alto, California, 2010
Doug Stanley, Ore City, Texas, 2011.
Nominate A Volunteer
Anyone may submit a nomination for the 2012 Summit Achievement Award before September 30, 2011. Visit www.americanfarriers.com/ff/givingback on the American Farriers Journal Website to obtain further details and the entry form for this recognition program. In addition to completing this form, please write a 1- to 2-page summary explaining why your nominee should be honored for his or her exceptional volunteer hoof-care work.
A panel comprised of hoof-care professionals will select a winner based on the amount of time, money, other contributed resources and the innovation of the contribution in terms of creativity and uniqueness. The judges will also evaluate the impact of the volunteered efforts to the equine community, the level of contribution on the local, regional, national or global level, the results of the volunteered work and the amount of required skill and knowledge.
This is your chance to nominate a well-deserving colleague and show them how much you appreciate his or her volunteered dedication and commitment to the equine industry.

Beach Access Threatened-Act Now!
Please read the following. Letters need to be into the City of Grover Beach by Jan. 28th.
Members of the Central Calf. Coastal Community,
In case you have not heard the City of Grover Beach is collaborating with the State park officials in planning a Lodge and Conference Center (LCC) at the corner of Grand and Hwy 1. The complex will take both sides of the street from Hwy 1 to the ocean. The State Park will lease this land to a Developer for 50 year increments.
We became aware of this plan because Ride Nipomo Equestrian group was paying attention and noticed that they were reducing the number of parking spaces for horses. After reviewing the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) we noticed they were reducing all parking and limiting everyone’s access to the beach. The LCC will have a large parking lot for their guests.
We are not happy that this development is removing areas devoted for public State Park Lands and leasing it to a commercial developer in an area which is growing rapidly and needs more parking spaces not less. We are concerned about using public park land to build a commercial resort.
The project does not show adequate horse parking, motor home parking, or parking for local citizens who wish to access the beach. This concerns us about the overall planning for this proposed project. The idea of removing public State Park areas from public use is unacceptable. This issue limits access to the beach, and our land and park will be gone. Where will the dog walkers, joggers, walkers, bike riders, and horse riders park?
The deadline for submission is January 28, 2011. You can e-mail or send regular mail. The state must address every concern sent to the addressee below:

By scanning for reactivity to different waveforms (energetic signatures of substances, frequency patterns, etc.) the body will communicate where areas of stress may be held. Using subtle energetic information in the form of electromagnetic waveform shapes, we are able to coax the body into a self healing, relaxation response. By sending a healthy pattern into our energy we , depending on our degree of resistance to change, will begin to resonate with the new information and be able to reduce and release stress allowing for higher levels of wellness throughout our experience.
By reducing stress and re-training, re-educating and re-informing our bodies and minds of healthier energy patterns, we are creating an environment for the body to naturally heal itself.

BLM News Release
BLM Announces 30-Day Extension of Comment Period for New Direction in National Wild Horse and Burro Program
WASHINGTON, DC – Today the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced it is extending the public comment period on its Wild Horse and Burro Program Strategy Development Document to September 3, 2010. The extension will provide members of the public with an interest in the management of America’s wild horses and burros an additional 30 days to comment on the document, which outlines possible management actions under consideration by the BLM to implement Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar’s Wild Horse and Burro Initiative. The bureau will also accept comments submitted via e-mail.
The BLM’s Strategy Development Document was initially released to the public for a 60-day review and comment period on June 3. The extension announced today will increase the public’s opportunity to provide input for the BLM as it prepares a long-term strategy for the management of America’s wild horses and burros. The BLM’s strategy will be presented in a detailed report to Congress. A PDF version of the Strategic Development Document is available by clicking on http://blm.gov/m14c.
“We made this decision because we are committed to providing the fullest possible opportunity for the public to join this dialogue regarding future management options for the nation’s wild horses,” said BLM Director Bob Abbey. “We are committed to working with all stakeholders in a transparent manner to ensure the future health of our wild horses.”
To ensure input from the broadest number of stakeholders, the BLM will also accept comments by email at wildhorse@blm.gov and by mail at BLM Washington Office,1849 C Street NW, Rm. 5665, Washington, DC 20240. If e-mailing comments, please put “WHB Public Comment” in the subject line. If sending by mail, comments need to be postmarked no later than September 3, 2010. The BLM is also soliciting feedback online using ePlanning (accessible online at http://blm.gov/m14c).
The BLM estimates that more than 38,000 wild horses and burros roam BLM-managed rangelands in 10 Western states. Another 35,000 wild horses and burros are fed and cared for at short-term corrals and long-term pastures. Costs for the program, particularly those for animals in holding facilities, have risen dramatically in the last several years. In Fiscal Year 2009, for example, approximately $29 million, or about 70 percent of the total wild horse and burro program budget of $40.6 million, was spent on animals held in corrals and pastures.
The original news release, the Udall Institute Report, and other documents are available at http://www.blm.gov/whbstrategy.
The BLM manages more land – more than 245 million acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.

Boot Media Press Release
For Immediate Release:
New Equestrian Television Network Releases Channel Information for Houston:
Also Announces Next Affiiate Channel in California.
Boot Media, LLC, which recently announced the national roll-out of a new television network dedicated to equestrian pursuits and farm and ranch country lifestyles, has released detailed information on its upcoming spring launch in Houston, as well as a second affiliate channel location.
“PegasusTV” will launch as digital channel 57.4 in the 10-county Houston television market on March 1, 2011, and have the distinction of being the first local affiliate channel of the new nationwide Pegasus Television Network. Pegasus is the mythical flying horse of Greek legend and is recognized throughout the world as a symbol of imagination, inspiration and the creative spirit of mankind.
The second local affiliate channel will be located in Fresno, in the heart of California’s central valley, the hub of the state’s agricultural industry. Following the Fresno launch, the debut of channels in other targeted cities will take place throughout Texas, California, Ohio and Florida. In the Houston and Fresno markets alone, PegasusTV will provide immediate network access to more than six million people.
One of the signature components in every market served by the new local PegasusTV channels is a commitment to allocate up to six hours of broadcast time at no cost each weekend for the exclusive use of local equestrian clubs and organizations, local colleges and universities with horse-oriented educational programs. This access also will be extended to similar organizations and educational institutions focused on farm animal care, maintenance and education.
While Pegasus Television Network has already targeted more than 25 high “horsehold” television markets for the inaugural roll-out of its affiliate channels, the network is readily available to any area in the country and welcomes contact from parties interested in establishing affiliate relationships. Independent cable systems in small rural communities are also included in the network’s affiliate marketing plan.
Potential national and local advertisers are encouraged to contact Boot Media LLC for complete information on many cost-effective advertising options. For example, Houston’s channel will offer rates as low as $10 for a :30 second television spot, with a minimum package buy of just $50.00, one of the lowest advertising rates to be found anywhere in the equestrian industry, in any medium.
Currently, the Pegasus Television Network is actively seeking and licensing programming content both domestically and internationally representing a wide variety of equestrian, farm and ranch animal and rural lifestyle programs.
PegasusTV will also be available on the Internet for those without local television access.
Equifava, Inc. continues to provide marketing and strategic planning services for Boot Media, LLC in the development of the Pegasus Television Network.
For general inquiries or for more information regarding Advertising, Programming, Affiliate or Investor Relations, please email info@bootmediallc.com.

Brass Oak Driving Clinic
The clinic at Overlook Driving Center on June 26 will be about obstacles and how to drive them. We will be working on improving our smoothness and overall time in hazards and cones by learning how to place our horse and carriage at the optimum spot on each turn we must make in the obstacle. This will also make you a safer and more confident driver in recreational situations. We will also play with some of the less common obstacle classes such as Gambler’s Choice, Reverse Psychology and maybe some more. Please bring your horse to this clinic if you want to drive or come without a horse if you want to observe and help, but not miss anything by having to take care of your horse. Limit is 10 horses on a first registration basis. Please register in advance and let us know if you want to bring a horse and whether you want a lunch. Fee is the normal $20. for the clinic and $5. for lunch. Call Linda Fairbanks at (805)237-8476 to register.

Cal Poly Dressage Team Wins Regionals
Cal Poly Dressage Team headed to Nationals
Successful show season wraps up after weekend at Stanford
The Cal Poly Dressage Team qualified for the Intercollegiate Dressage Association National Championships. After a very successful culmination to the collegiate equestrian competition season, Cal Poly became the Regional Champions after a two-day horse show at Stanford University this past weekend, qualifying for the National Championships which will be hosted by Centenary College in New Jersey April 28-29.
Going into the Regional Finals this weekend, the team standings were very close, with Cal Poly, Stanford, and UC Davis all within one point of each other. On Saturday, Cal Poly won in team rankings, and also took first place in 3 out of the 4 divisions of competition. Jenny Kerr at First Level, Lauren Eberle at Lower Training Level, and Bree Greer at Introductory Level each won their classes. Greer took High Point Rider with a score over 70%. Eberle won on a tiebreaker with teammate Katie Rhodes-Long, who competed as an individual for Cal Poly On Sunday, Kerr and Eberle took 3rd, Greer won Introductory level again (and remains undefeated in the league) and Rachael Knopf won Upper Training and High Point Rider with a score of 72.4%. Greer and Knopf also both qualified individually to compete at the National Championships. Kerr, Kauffman, Eberle and Greer will comprise the team on Day 1 of Nationals; Knopf and Greer will compete as individuals on Day 2.
Dressage is an equestrian sport in which a horse and rider pair perform a series of pre-determined movements which are scored individually on a scale of 1 to 10. Dressage has its roots in cavalry and military training- the goal is to make difficult maneuvers appear effortless and harmonious communication between horse and rider is strived for at all levels. In collegiate competition, which is regulated by the Intercollegiate Dressage Association (www.teamdressage.com), the host school provides horses for all the riders and horses are assigned by lottery. Each rider has 10 minutes to ride their assigned horse in order to warm up and become acquainted with its individual quirks and way of going. This system emphasizes the rider skill and levels the playing field so an effective rider can be competitive regardless of financial situation.
Cal Poly Dressage Team practices at the Equine Center on campus with their 4 team horses. No riding experience is necessary to join, and riders of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome. Student Coach Sara Robinow guides riders through routines during the week and in the warm-up ring at shows, assisted by alumnus Adrienne Klamt and faculty advisor Alaina Parsons.

California Coastal Horse Rescue, Ojai Valley Receives Challenge Grant for Hay
California Coastal Horse Rescue, a l0-acre non-profit equine rescue and sanctuary in Ojai, has received a Challenge Grant from the Hind Foundation in San Luis Obispo. In addition to sponsoring the Fund’s inaugural year, the Hind Foundation will match every dollar contributed to CCHR by Central Coast-wide donors up to $7,500, generating a total of $15,000 to advance this new community equine outreach.
The California Coastal Horse Rescue Emergency Hay Fund — Sponsored by the Hind Foundation will help feed Central Coast horses that are close to losing their homes due to their owner’s extreme financial hardship. “We are pleased to sponsor this innovative new CCHR Fund,” said Greg Hind, Hind Foundation president, Central Coast philanthropist and horse advocate. “It will provide temporary hay assistance without charge at the most crucial time. Our family has a special love for horses, and we are excited to help prevent their displacement from the families who love them.” Hind is a San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year for his support of vital charitable causes.
“This rare new Fund is keeping many horses from losing their homes or even being euthanized due to foreclosures and a continuing difficult economy,” said Cindy Murphree, CCHR director.
“CCHR has helped abandoned, abused, neglected and displaced horses in Ventura County, Santa Barbara County and San Luis Obispo County for over 12 years,” Murphree said. “We coordinate temporary foster homes statewide, and take calls from anywhere for advice or referrals for horses in distress. We also partner with local law enforcement and fire departments to help with community horse evacuations in disasters. All horse assistance is provided free of charge.”
To make a tax-deductible gift to help Central Coast horses and earn the Hind Foundation’s generous match, visit http://www.calcoastalhorserescue.com/ and click on Network for Good. CCCMB Sponsored Trail Workday at Santa Margarita Lake
The mission of Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (CCCMB) is to expand the network of sustainable and enjoyable trails in SLO County and to maintain the trails currently in use. Since 1987, CCCMB has worked with California State Parks, the National Forest Service, San Luis Obispo City, and San Luis Obispo County in designing and building new trails and in maintaining existing ones.
Help CCCMB keep the trails of SLO County open and fun to ride by joining us for trail work. Just bring yourself and water. Wear long sleeves, long pants, sturdy boots, gloves and a hat.
Santa Margarita Lake: December 11, 8:30am
Meet at White Oak Picnic Area at main entrance. This trail needs lots of help because the water runs down the center of the trail causing major erosion. The other issue is that brush is growing on the inside of the trail, pushing horses to the outside edge and breaking down the trail. There are two options for working:
- One is to take the pontoon boat across the lake to work on the western end of the Falcon Trail (almost directly across from the White Oak dock). This will involve some hiking, and individuals can decide how much hiking they want to do. We will be working on fixing drainage issues to get the water off the trail and reduce erosion. This will be the more strenuous option.
- The other option is to ride in from the River Road entrance and ride up the east entrance of the Falcon Trail (closer to the Sapwi Trail). The goal here is to bring loppers and cut back vegetation that is growing on the inside edge of the trail, which forces horses to the outside edge which breaks down the trail. This group can decide how far they want to go. It is not expected that you will ride the entire trail. It is better that you don’t, so that you won’t meet the group working from the west end. You will need to bring your own loppers.

Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers Sponsor Trail Work Days
Trail work — maintenance and creation — is tough. It takes a lot of people to be willing to do the work to get trails put in and maintained. With the current economic downturn, all of us who ride trails need to step up and pitch in. It sends a message to park managers that we – the equestrian community – are committed to our local trail system. It also says that we are committed to working with other multi-use trail users such as hikers and mountain bikers. So in the spirit of community involvement, here are trail workdays sponsored by the Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers. Just bring yourself and water. Wear long sleeves, long pants, sturdy boots, and a hat.

Certified Horsemanship Association Provides University and College Class Lectures on Horsemanship Safety and Education
The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) has a library of topics that can be taught remotely by Chief Executive Officer Christy Landwehr and other key staff to university and college students throughout North America. Some of the presentation topics include: Teaching Techniques for Riding Instructors, Risk Management in a Riding Program, Event Planning, Marketing Your Equine Business, Working with At-Risk Youth in a Riding Program and many more.“I would highly recommend utilizing Christy Landwehr’s talents and CHA’s training materials for a collegiate level riding instructors training course,” says Dr. Ann Swinker Extension Horse Specialist and Associate Professor of Dairy and Animal Sciences at Penn State University.“Each semester Christy Landwehr talks to my Riding Theory & Techniques class about learning styles, teaching techniques and certification through Certified Horsemanship Association”, says Crystal Smith Professor of Animal Science at West Virginia University. “Her discussion leads my students to think about how riding lessons are formatted and why, what type of learner they are, and also helps them reflect on me as an instructor. Coupon Section to be Included in The 2012 Horse Industry Resource Guide
Tack shops, feed stores, boarding stables, horse trainers and other equine businesses in all of the 50 states are being encouraged to be part of the coupon section in the forthcoming 2012 The Horse Industry Resource Guide.
The Horse Industry Resource Guide, which in 2011 included more than 100,000 horse businesses, product manufacturers, horse trainers, vets, etc. is digitally published each year by One Horse Press. It includes a national section featuring horse products, services, and breed and show organizations. The “state” section includes services ranging from tack shops and feed stores to horse trainers and boarding stables. This year’s edition will also include coupon sections for each state, and a “Made In The USA” section.
“Coupons, which offer either a discount or a rebate, are a great way for horse related businesses to expand their customer base and to stimulate each state’s equine industry economy,” says Laurie Cerny, owner of One Horse Press. “The more that can be done to help local equine businesses, the better.”
The coupon section will be in addition to the basic business listings in the guide. A basic business listing, which includes the business name, phone number, and address is free. In addition, upgraded listings are available for just $10 for a bolded listing that includes an email address and web site, or $20 for 75 words of descriptive text. Coupons are just $20.
For more information about The Horse Industry Resource Guide call (269) 657-3842, or go to https://sites.google.com/site/thehorseindustryresourceguide/ An inclusion form for the “Made In The USA” section can be downloaded from the site. A form for the coupon section is also available at the website.

Create A Better Connection With Your Horse With A Challenge By Choice Horsemanship Clinic March 24 & 25, 2012
Through a series of exercises and simple drills participants discover a new connection to their horse. We approach obstacles and refusals with positive communication which keeps rider and horse calm and responsive. We also find that when we prepare for certain things off the horse it translates quicker once riders are mounted. For riders that attend not because they are having trouble, but just want to have better skills, this clinic helps them make their horse more responsive using less cue (and less Drama!)
Our obstacles are really very simple. You determine the level of challenge for you and for your horse at each obstacle. (aka “Nothing scary unless that is your “Challenge by Choice”)
We are not another desensitization or “spook” clinic.
Challenge by Choice Horsemanship workshops develop rider skills, and help diffuse dramatic situations that arise when riding. With acceptance of a wide range of participants, from fairly inexperienced riders or green horses, to considerably experienced people and some very well trained horses (and some horses who have learned a few evasion “tricks”) and anxious riders with phobias or riding stresses, a nice mix allows a variety of experiences from which all participants can learn and grow.
March 24 & 25, 2012 clinic is taking reservations now. $275 for 2 days with $100 deposit.
Send to: The Wagner Ranch/Eric Wagner Training, POB 567, Pismo Beach, CA 93448
Event will be held at the Starlite Meadow Farm in Nipomo, CA. Overnight stabling is available.
Interested in offering this workshop in your area or at your facility? Contact us to learn how!
Challenge by Choice Horsemanship Clinic(c) can be offered at your ranch or club.
If you have access to a covered arena it’s a nice winter option for trail riding clubs to keep horses tuned up while the trails are muddy.
Challenge by Choice Horsemanship Clinics have been conceived, developed and are facilitated exclusively by Eric Wagner & Beth Wonson. Visit our website for more information: www.TheWagnerRanch.com

Dark Horse Farms Accepting Quality Show Jumpers & Derby Hunters

Davey Stamey Benefit Concert for Foster Children
March 5th, 5-10pm
Edwards Barn, Nipomo
$75 per person
(805) 934-1513
“…last year I was involved in a community action initiative to help reduce gang involvement among the young people of the city of Santa Maria. The more I learned about why young people join gangs the more I came to realize the importance of early preventive intervention. I also learned that foster children, by the very nature of all that they must endure, often gravitate towards gangs. Gang life is just one of many negative lifestyles they find themselves being drawn towards.
In an effort to help foster children in our community overcome the odds against them and experience expressed love and concern from caring adults, Gloria and I along with Eric and Diane Rae have decided to work towards providing a special week long summer camp experience for foster children between the ages of 7 and 11. Our hope is to send 24 of these children to camp this summer.
On Saturday, March 5th, we will be having a benefit concert featuring Dave Stamey. As you know Dave has been a cowboy, a mule packer, a dude wrangler, and is now one of the most popular Western entertainers working today. He has been voted three times Entertainer of the Year, three times Male Performer of the Year and twice Songwriter of the Year by the Western Music Association, and received the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western Artists. Dave’s concert will provide a great evening of entertainment for a great cause!! And to top it off we are including a complete Santa Maria style BBQ! So between the food and the music people are guaranteed to leave having an amazing experience.
I know that there are many good causes within our community. However, this is one I personally believe has particular merit for a group of children I have come to learn are often neglected and ignored.
With special appreciation,
Warren F. Gabarée

De-Spooking and Turnout Clinic
April 2,2011
Starting at 9:00 AM, a selection of objects and obstacles will be available to you to desensitize your horse to these perhaps new, perhaps scary things. Equines will be taken in-hand, on halter and lead (or bridle and lead) around to become unafraid of the things they see.
At each station, a container of horse cookies will be available if you wish to reward your animal for bravery. The rules are: no whipping, no yelling, no drama. If you need help getting your animal to approach an object, just ask. Everything is structured to be safe and within reason. Obstacles include but are not limited to: balloons, flags, water crossing, alpacas, a maze, walking over a mattress and a tarp, loud sounds and music, blowing objects, objects being dragged over a hard surface, a narrow place, and a 40″ soccer ball for horses to play with. Suitable for equines who are at least one year of age and well broke to lead.
After lunch, you are Invited to put on your best duds in one of our dressing rooms, mount your best carriage and be photographed and look at yourself in a mirror and be evaluated by others to determine If the look is what you want. You are invited to bring extra hats, laprobes jackets and shoes to share so that people can get an idea how they want to look as they
compete in carriage driving. If you wish, hook up your horse and get the whole picture. You will learn what colors best compliment you and your turnout and what shades set off your best qualities. Take the pictures home with you for reference.

EHV-1 Contained in California
CALIFORNIA DECLARES CONTAINMENT
OF EQUINE HERPES VIRUS (EHV-1) OUTBREAK
SACRAMENTO, June 20, 2011 – The recent disease outbreak of the neuropathogenic strain of Equine Herpes Virus -1 (EHV-1) associated with the horses that attended the National Cutting Horse Associations Western National Championships in Ogden, UT is contained. Containment is based on the fact that California has gone more than 14 days from the last clinical case onset date without a confirmed clinical case of EHV-1.
“I want to thank California’s horse owners and veterinarians for their prompt and thorough actions to isolate and monitor exposed animals and contain this outbreak of EHV-1,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Annette Whiteford. “We also owe the success of this project in part to the outstanding isolation biosecurity measures implemented by horse facility managers, show/event managers and other professionals who work with and care for horses.”
It is important that the California horse owners remain vigilant as there is always risk of disease when horses of unknown health status are commingled at one location. Consistent, basic biosecurity practices play an important role in reducing risk of exposure to diseases such as influenza, strangles, pigeon fever, or equine herpes virus.
By implementing the biosecurity measures below, you can minimize disease risk:
- Minimize horse nose-to-nose contact with horses of unknown disease status.
- Don’t share equipment including buckets, tack and grooming equipment.
- Avoid using communal water troughs.
- Fill water buckets directly from the faucet to eliminate potential hose contamination.
- Limit human contact between horses or wash hands or use hand sanitizer between horse contacts.
- Prior to returning home from an event, clean and disinfect all equipment, including trailer, clothing, tack grooming supplies.
- Isolate all new horses or horses returning home for a minimum of three weeks. Isolation means no direct contact with other horses or humans and no indirect contact via shared equipment.
- Consult your veterinarian to establish appropriate vaccination for your horse(s).
Horse owners are strongly encouraged to consult their veterinarian regarding these steps and others to determine how best to reduce the risk of your horse acquiring an infectious disease.

Equine Flair, new luxury lifestyle magazine by Elite Equestrian
Elite Equestrian magazine has been published for four years now, and has grown consistently to establish a solid standing in the equestrian print media market. With this foundation, the publishers of Elite Equestrian are proud to announce that we are expanding our line of magazines with a full size (8 x 10) luxury equine themed lifestyle magazine… Equine Flair.
The publishers of Elite Equestrian believe that luxury is an art, not a trend. Anyone who appreciates quality desires it in every aspect of their life. The passion combined with the time and financial demands that equestrian pursuits encompass is a perfect exemplification of lifestyle versus hobby.
The dedicated equestrian possesses a mind set that penetrates every aspect of one’s life- time spent, finances, travel, even personal style and home decor- a true lifestyle. Equine Flair epitomizes this standard.
We are proud to welcome a number of seasoned contributors who are the manifestation of equestrian lifestyle:
L.A. Pomeroy: American Horse Publications’ 2008 best Feature Article finalist and 2010 Freelance Writer Equine-related Journalism (Print) Award winner. L.A. Pomeroy works inside the highest levels of FEI and Olympic equestrian sport, and has turned her Harvard University education in visual design and stylish Manhattan and music world connections into an inside track on what’s hot (and who’s not) in equestrian art, collectibles, entertainment, fashion and design. In addition to being her state’s only female sports journalist accredited with the International Alliance of Equestrian Journalists, and National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Association, she is official Media Liaison for the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA), and regularly provides image and wordsmithing services, and social media administration, to a stable of equestrian companies and media outlets.
Vicky Moon: Writer and photographer Vicky Moon has chronicled the lives of the rich, the not-so-rich, the famous, and the not-so-famous for more than twenty years. She has covered murders and prominent lives for People Magazine and the Washington Post; and written about lavish hunt balls, International polo matches, steeplechase races, and parties for Town and Country, Millionaire, Veranda, and Southern Accents magazines. She has served as a contributing editor for House and Garden. Ms. Moon is the author of The Official Middleburg Life Cookbook, The Middleburg Mystique: A Peek Inside the Gates of Middleburg, Virginia, A Sunday Horse: A Year on the Grand Prix Show Jumping Circuit, Best Dressed Southern Salads, The Private Passion of Jackie Kennedy Onassis: Portrait of A Rider,, Equestrian Style: Home Design, Couture, and Collections from the Eclectic to the Elegant.
Jeanne Chisholm, The Chisholm Gallery: Located in the picturesque and historic Pine Plains, New York, Jeanne first opened the Chisholm Gallery in the grandstand of the Palm Beach Polo & Country Club with her late husband, Hugh Jeremy Chisholm in 1978. Their gallery was an immediate success and quickly acquired the largest collection of polo art for sale in the world. Jeanne has worked with museums throughout her life, her accomplishments including curating an exhibit commemorating 100 years of polo history at the Aiken Thoroughbred Racing Museum and Hall of Fame in Aiken, South Carolina. Jeanne has served as the Coordinating Director of the National Polo Museum and Hall of Fame. The renowned London Colnaghi Gallery invited the Chisholm Gallery to participate in their very first sporting art exhibit. Jeanne and her work have been featured in Architectural Digest, Town and Country, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Polo Magazine, Equine Visions, Palm Beach Life, and many more publications.
The management at Elite Equestrian is very excited about the premier of this new addition to our line of publications. Equine Flair will set a precedent for the exhilarating, dedicated lifestyle of discriminating equestrians everywhere.

EquinePro Newsletter: Innovative Marketing Technology Targets Equine Industry
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Feb. 15 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) — Professional horse trainer and creator Donna Cheek, announced today the launching of EquinePro™ a marketing system designed specifically for the equine industry. The fully automated online newsletter service allows horse industry professionals to take advantage of the proven strategy of relationship and viral marketing with a “hands off” approach.
Ms. Cheek, an equine trainer with 39 years of experience in the horse business, developed EquinePro™ to provide an affordable and convenient way for trainers, barn owners and breeders to market their services to the public.

Free Yoga for Horses Video
From April Battles. We would like to bring her here for a clinic. Let us know if you are interested. Email to tina@teamtlc.net
Pain in the horse’s body-the horse unable to do what we are asking of them-is what is causing most of today’s training and behavioral issues. Professional trainers and all around horse owners-saying the horse ”won’t do a certain move” or behave a certain way-when it actually comes down to it is uncomfortable-even painful for the horse to do what we are asking of them. Come learn more-find out how to tell if this is the issue with your horse: http://www.youtube.com/user/HolisticHorseWorks
I find the body releases it’s issues better when worked with more energetically than physically. I start by asking the horse permission to communicate, touch, work on before starting to do so. I balance the yin/yang of the horse energetically, work on kidney and bladder meridian, combine Ortho Bionomy type moves with myofascial releases to release the skeleton to proper working form and then release muscle spasms from ‘compensations’ of a body not working properly. Adding Cranio Sacral releases to all this helps the whole nervous system to unwind as well. Unwinding of the whole horse takes about 1 hr 30 min, horse owners notice horses seem to get taller, longer, fluffier and look like they added on about 20 lbs. Releasing muscle memory with my Osteopathic type yoga stretches allows the horse to start moving correctly immediately, along with getting the feet rebalanced soon after the bodywork session. Also I involve the horse owner in this healing process by doing my horse yoga daily with their horse when they can. My FREE yoga for horses can be seen on Youtube on my channel http://www.youtube.com/user/HolisticHorseWorks MY YOGA IS TO BE USED AS A DIAGNOSTIC TOOL-IF YOUR HORSE CANNOT EASILY DO ALL 6 STRETCHES THEN THERE ARE DEEPER ISSUES PRESENT NEEDING TO BE RESOLVED. A horse not moving each body part correctly results in another body part working twice as hard-presenting premature arthritic conditions. Your horse should be healthy and rideable till they are 30.

Grover Beach City Council Meeting Notes: Horse Staging Area
From Linda Clarke:
The Grover Beach City Council held its first of many meetings towards the beginnings of the new Beach Complex at the end of Grand Ave. in the horse staging area. I am not a secretary so bear with me with the notes I took.
1. EIR should be on the Grover Beach website Dec. 15 , the library, and at City Hall for people to look at.
2. 150 room motel, a restaurant to hold 160 people, a pool with an area to hold 80 people. 180,000 sq. feet of landscape, and a total of 415 parking spaces spread over the compound, also the dump station will be moved closer to one of the parks.
3. The first choice for the horse staging area is across from Finns in the dunes. It will go from the 1 ½ acre site to a ½ acre site. They probably will not put in spaces but it was stated if they did have spaces they would hold 10-15 rigs. There is a plan “B” if the Coastal Commission does not approve of moving the staging area into the dunes, but that was not addressed during the formal meeting.
4. Sequence of events Draft EIR-December 15-January 28 (45 days)/Draft EIR comment closes February/
5. Final EIR is released March/Planning Commission Hearing March/City Council Hearing April or May/Coastal Commission hearing TBD /Coastal Development Permit TBD
6. Linda Clarke has put together a committee to answer many of the questions we all have and want to voice to the Grover Beach City Council. Another email will soon follow with contact information for these various individuals. (Individuals were picked representing the majoring of the horse groups in the county.) You may also contact the Grover Beach City Council members with your concerns. For further information you may contact Linda ( ljclarke@thegrid.net)

Horse Emergency Evacuation Team Training
HEET will be having our last training of the year on July 9th. We are combining 2 trainings into one meeting. The first part of the training will be equine first aid with Andy Dibbern, DVM, who is also our State Equine Emergency Network Coordinator. This class will cover shock, bleeding, bandaging of wounds, colic, burns, how to handle an unruly horse, smoke inhalation, plus much more. After a short break, where a continental breakfast will be served, Dr. Dibbern will be joined by CAL FIRE Airport Station 21 to give a demonstration of the Anderson Sling on a live horse. The Anderson Sling is used for vertical lifts when an animal is unable to be moved any other way. Also, a demo of the Rescue Glides will be given. The glides are used to “slide” a downed animal up a hill. HEET was instrumental in supplying both the Anderson Sling and the Rescue Glides to the county of San Luis Obispo by donations received from SLOPOST and the SLO Chapter California Dressage Society. Both the Anderson Sling and Rescue Glides are housed with CAL FIRE to use whenever the need arises.
Horse Expo Pomona Welcome Package
Free parking for first 100 cars, meal deals, finest clinicians, breathtaking competitions and terrific shopping highlight this stellar event!
Horse Expo Pomona promises to be a fun-filled gathering of like-minded horse enthusiasts February 2-4, 2012 (Thursday-Saturday) at the Fairplex in Pomona. This event will be like no other that’s ever been presented in Southern California.
“It’s fairly obvious to the horse world that we’re holding this expo on the same dates as Equine Affaire has for a decade,” comments Horse Expo Pomona founder Miki Cohen. “But what we’re bringing to these three action-packed days is really unique and festive.
“We recognize that our Expo will be the first we’ve created in the area,” continues Cohen, “but we have an incredible track record of bringing the ever-popular Horse Expo to Sacramento for over a decade — which people love.
“Now that we’ve decided to expand and present a world-class Expo in Pomona, we want people to really feel welcomed, entertained and educated. In fact, we’re offering free parking for the first 100 cars each day, hearty meals for only $7, and our Expo Bucks will give you $3 off admission. So people can come armed with an Expo Buck and get entrance admission and all three meals for only $36,” continues Cohen. “What a great deal!”
One thing that stands out in the staging of this new event is the expansive presentation of horse trailers. They’ll all be displayed outside, where you can kick tires and poke your head into the living quarter models. In fact, there will even be trailer trade-in opportunities, financing, and a trailer service area. The horse trailer display will be huge, much like what Sacramento’s Horse Expo offers, including trucks, ATVs, barns, corrals and tractors.
Attendees can stroll through outdoor vendor booths on their path to the various arenas where competitions and demonstrations take place each day and on Friday and Saturday nights. A variety of horse breeds can be admired along the way.
“We know that shopping is a significant reason why people gather together at horse expos,” smiles Cohen. “We’re creating a new, friendly atmosphere for people to talk to vendors and view their products. For a lot of people, this will be like a family reunion, and it’s the same for the vendors too. It’s exciting to see familiar faces and new products. The new vendor areas — some outdoors — will accompany our plans for different arena layouts. It’s a whole new event in just about every way possible, and we’re really excited about it! And I know attendees will be over-the-moon thrilled about all the activities at the Expo — competitions and demonstrations by the best in the business.”
Horse Expo Pomona will welcome horse enthusiasts Thursday – Saturday, February 2-4, 2012 (no event on Sunday so you can watch the Super Bowl!). And remember to download your Expo Bucks on-line (http://www.horseexpoevents.com/) for a $3 discount on admission tickets — and come early so you can be one of the first 100 cars to get free parking!

Horse Finds a Home

Update on Chance: Chance has found a home!!!
This Sweet, Pretty Appy Gelding is approx. 14 yrs old and 14.3 hands. He trailers, ties, is good with hooves, easy to catch, good with other horses and dogs etc. He’s an easy keeper. He does have arthritis and is not serviceable as a riding horse. He has not been ridden for some years. Chance would be a great pasture buddy, weed eater or friend. He loves people and is very friendly. He was taken in as a rescue but can’t be kept.
Chance is Free to Good Home, Please Call 805-929-3209 in Nipomo or email kippps@aol.com
Please help us find Chance a home!
- He was registered as a POA, but grew a few inches more than the standard, at least 14 hands, if not a little more.
- He is an Arabian and Appaloosa mix.
- He is about 14 years old, and in good health except for a little arthritis in his left hind leg. He will let you lift and check all but that one.
- He had been fully trained, but has not been worked or ridden for a long time.
- He would require a light weight rider, and would benefit from gentle exercise to moderate exercise, but is no longer fit to be run hard or taken on long distance rides, or jumping.

Horse Industry Resource Guide
“Made In The USA” Section To be Included In The 2012 The Horse Industry Resource Guide
Any equine product that is made in America will be included for free in a special “Made In The USA” section of the 2012 The Horse Industry Resource Guide.
Horse product manufacturers have until October 1, 2011 to get their information for inclusion in the section for next year’s guide.
“As horse owners we can help our economy by purchasing products for our horses that are made in the USA,” says Laurie Cerny, owner of One Horse Press. “Many of us longtime horse owners continue to spend a decent amount of money on our horses. By purchasing tack, clothing, and horse products that are made in America we can use our horse habit to help keep jobs here in the United States.”
The section will be in addition to the basic business listings in the guide. A basic business listing, which includes the business name, phone number, and address is free. In addition, upgraded listings are available for just $10 for a bolded listing that includes an email address and web site, or $20 for 75 words of descriptive text.
For more information about The Horse Industry Resource Guide call (269) 657-3842, or go to https://sites.google.com/site/thehorseindustryresourceguide/ . An inclusion form for the “Made In The USA” section can be downloaded from the site.

Horsemen’s Reunion
By Caitlin Cannon
It was a sunny and clear morning for the opening day of the first ever Horsemen’s Reunion held at the Mid-State Fairgrounds in Paso Robles, California. The event, organized by Cathie and Rowley Twisselman of Flying T Quarter Horses, featured twenty cowboys from around the world starting forty unbroken two and three-year-old Quarter Horses.
Unlike most colt starting demonstrations and competitions, which last less than three days and are often judged, the Reunion lasted a full week and was non-competitive. The event was advertised as a display of excellent horsemanship rather than a race to see who could start a young horse the fastest. Each trainer received two colts at random and ninety minutes of time each day to transform them into working cow horses. The horses, bred and raised by the Twisselmans, had been halter broken as yearlings to allow veterinary care but were otherwise previously unhandled. At the end of the week the horses were auctioned off.
In spite of the longer time frame there was a remarkable amount of stress put on the young horses on the first day of training, and many of the colts bucked and fought their trainers. Quite a few of the trainers relied on old-school methods of colt breaking such as hobbling or lassoing a rear hoof in order to prevent the colt from moving while they were aggressively sacked out with tarps or plastic bags. Although all of the colts were saddled and ridden on their first day many of the colts seemed overwhelmed by the intensity and more than one ended the day still fighting the trainer.
Despite the varied geographic origin of the horsemen participating in the event the training methods used were for the most part remarkably uniform. This no doubt resulted from the influence of Ray Hunt and Tom Dorrance who trained or influenced most of the trainers present.
The event was an interesting look into the world of cowboy colt starting but to the untrained eye the horse training methods did not seem particularly different from the standard. Next year it would be wonderful to see a wider variety of training methods as well as some women colt starters!

Horses USA® Magazine Offers Advice to First-Time Horse Buyers
2012 issue celebrates its 15-year anniversary with a how-to guide to horse shopping
Irvine, Calif., August 26, 2011 — Horses USA, the complete guide to buying and caring for a horse, provides tips on purchasing your first horse in its 15-year anniversary edition.
“Developing the skills to ride, handle and care for horses is a continuous learning process, but a solid foundation is absolutely essential. For 15 years, we’ve been helping new horse owners get started on the right hoof,” said Horses USA Editor Elizabeth Moyer.
Points to consider before buying a horse include:
Can you provide a proper home? – Horses need safe and appropriate housing, so owners must decide whether to use a boarding stable or setting up horsekeeping on their own property.
Have you explored the less glamorous aspects of horse care? –For every hour spent in the saddle, there are probably two or three devoted to taking care of your mount, and more if you are maintaining horse property – and these chores don’t take weekends and holidays off. If you’re new to horse ownership and care, it’s important to understand what’s involved.
Can you really afford a horse? – In addition to budgeting for routine expenses such as feed and farrier care, first-time horse owners need to be prepared for the costs of unexpected veterinary visits, miscellaneous horse care supplies and more. New horse owners will need to get outfitted with basic tack and equipment, adding to start-up costs. Riding instruction should also be considered a smart investment to get off to a good start with a new equine partner.
Do you have time for this? – Horse ownership is time consuming. Potential horse owners should consider how they can manage the demands of a job, family, friends and finances and still be a great horse owner.
The complete article on buying your first horse, titled “Shop Right – A How-to Guide for Horse Shoppers” is part of Horses USA’s 15-year anniversary issue. To read the full article, pick up the 2012 edition of Horses USA, on newsstands or online at http://www.HorseChannel.com/HorseUSA2012 beginning August 23, 2011.
Horses USA is produced by the editors of Horse Illustrated® magazine (http://www.horseillustrated.com/) and Horsechannel.com (http://horsechannel.com/). Horse Illustrated is the largest all-breed, all-discipline horse magazine and has been published for over 35 years. How To Take A Hay Sample For Analysis
It’s not uncommon for horse owners to select hay simply based on what looks “good”, or the recommendations of others, or what’s available at the local feed store. How can you learn what’s really in that hay? Is it going to provide proper nutrition for your horse’s needs? Clair Thunes, PhD, shows you how to take a hay sample to send to a lab for nutritional analysis. In addition to being an independent equine nutritionist, Dr. Thunes is a certified hay sampler with the National Forage Hay Testing Association. In her Summit Equine Nutrition program, she has worked with a wide range of horses from lactating mares to competitive driving horses, and with a variety of physiological problems including insulin resistance and muscle myopathies. Dr. Thunes believes in finding the right balance in the horse’s diet for optimal performance. Contact Dr. Thunes at http://www.summit-equine.com/.

THAT’S HORSE SENSE! WORLD’S BRAINIEST HORSE CAN COUNT
By Tammy Hughes
Meet Lukas, a world record-breaking nag, who brings a new meaning to the phrase horse sense. This 19-year-old chestnut Thoroughbred can fetch, sit, rear, and even COUNT on command. Last year Lukas smashed the Guinness world record for the amount of numbers correctly identified by a horse in one minute. He managed a whopping 19 right to the delight of devoted owner Karen Murdock.
Karen, from California, adopted Lukas 10 years ago after he was rescued from his owner’s littered backyard. She said, “He was a racehorse but he didn’t win anything so he was given away. He ended up in someone’s back yard, a bag of bones, with no grazing and very little space. He was eventually rescued and I saw him advertised in the local newspaper. I’ve always loved horseback riding and I wanted to be able to jump and compete at shows. From the start I could tell Lukas was intelligent; he figured out that it was much easier to go around the jumps than go over them.”
Her dreams of shows and ribbons dashed, Karen decided not to give up on Lukas and began to train him in obedience. According to Karen, “I was sent to live with a foster family when I was 14, so I’ve got a strong sense of responsibility when it comes to people or animals in my care.” Lukas much preferred obedience training to being ridden and he took to it straight away. Karen states, “His attention span was amazing and I quickly taught him to come, rear and even sit on command.” Then using a method of repetition, she began to teach him to tell the difference between various shapes and even numbers. Karen, who lives with her husband Doug, expressed that her partner and daughter, Angela, are very supportive of her special relationship with Lukas. “I think they love the way we are such close friends. I see Lukas every day and spend a number of hours with him; I couldn’t imagine my life without him.”

Mark Rashid Clinic Report
Submitted by Beth Wonson
Well-known Colorado based horseman, Mark Rashid (www.MarkRashid.com) led a three-day clinic on High Mountain Road in Arroyo Grande this week. The clinic held at the ranch of Anita Parra included participants from as far away as British Columbia and others who simply walked their horse across the meadow from the ranch next door. Attendees came with wide a range of challenges and concerns that they hoped would be resolved through three days of one-on-one sessions with Rashid.
Participants included a former competitive equestrian re-learning to ride again after recovering from a broken pelvis suffered in a non-horse related accident. A teenaged boy and his grandfather worked on calming their skittish, untrusting mare. A 20-year-old Arabian who hadn’t been handled in 18 years and her owner learned effective groundwork. Rashid told observers that had his wife been with him, she would want to take the sweet mare back to Colorado. “Just what we need, another horse”, Rashid joked as he lovingly stroked her neck.
Rashid’s humor, calm manner and easygoing disposition compliment his technique and philosophy for working with horses. “Considering the Horse” a title of one of Rashid’s books, was a key message point to participants seeking improvement.
Rashid is one of several well-known trainers who travel to the Central Coast each year providing clinics. The cost to participate in a series of one-on-one sessions over three days was $595. The cost to audit/observe was $30 per day.

Monty Roberts Honored by the Queen
Monty Roberts Honored Privately by the Queen for Service to the Royal Family
Award for Service to Her Majesty’s Racing Establishment bestowed upon Monty Roberts
England (June 11, 2011) – LEGENDARY “Horse Whisperer” Monty Roberts, 76, was honored privately by the Queen for service to the Royal Family and Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, for his service to the racing establishment.
The American trainer, whose gentle techniques are based on the silent language of horses, was made an honorary Member of the Royal Victorian Order. The Royal Victorian Order is given by the Queen to people who have served her or the monarchy in a personal way. In 1989, the Queen Mother was reduced to tears after Roberts managed to tame her wildest horse. Roberts has been involved with some aspects of the monarchy’s horses ever since.
Responding to the experience, Roberts said: “The ball is in my court now and it is my obligation to continue to earn the respect that my supporters have given me over this past 22 years since first meeting Her Majesty in 1989.”
In the early 1990s Roberts toured England at the behest of the Queen to demonstrate his methods. The novel The Horse Whisperer was being written in England during this time. In 1996, nearly simultaneously, Mr. Roberts’ autobiography The Man Who Listens to Horses and the novel The Horse Whisperer were published in England and immediately became bestsellers in non-fiction and fiction categories, respectively. Both books also became bestsellers in the United States the following year. Roberts’ autobiography remained on the bestsellers list for 58 weeks competing with books such as Angela’s Ashes, Tuesdays with Morrie as well as the many books published after Princess Diana’s sudden death.
Monty Roberts is Back in the USA
Monty Roberts has announced several upcoming clinics in California; rare appearances in the past few years. Roberts spends about 300 days per year touring worldwide to live audiences interested in his renowned concepts of gentle horse training. He has toured continually since the release of his first book The Man Who Listens to Horses, a New York Times bestseller in 1996.
Roberts has revolutionized the way many horses are trained today worldwide. His Flag Is Up Farms in Solvang, California, is a highlight in the newly published book, Stables, by Kathryn Masson from Rizzoli Press for which a book signing will be held in Santa Barbara June 11. Flag Is Up Farms is world renowned for developing and maintaining the Join-Up International teaching of force-free horse training.
On May 24-26, Roberts will teach a three day clinic, RIDING WITH RESPECT: striving for performance from your horse through non-violent training. This is the first ridden clinic given by Roberts at Flag Is Up Farms in over 10 years. Riders from all levels will learn Monty’s perspective of understanding the horse’s generous nature. All disciplines and types of horses are attending.
Roberts has been a supporter of the nearby Light Hands Horsemanship clinic and will appear there for a demonstration on May 22 with his champion reining cow horse Nice Chrome. Roberts will besharing the expertise that enables him to win nine world’s championships in the show ring.
In August, Roberts will personally teach and demonstrate over five intensive days with a cross section of breeds exhibiting training challenges such as bucking, bolting and biting. The August 16-20 clinic will also be held on Flag Is Up Farms in Solvang, California. Roberts holds several degrees including two doctorates in behavioral sciences. This course is offered to people from all over the world who wish to learn from a master educator.
MONTY ROBERTS first gained widespread fame with the release of his New York Times Best Selling book, The Man Who Listens To Horses; a chronicle of his life and development of his non-violent horse training methods called Join-Up®. Monty grew up on a working horse farm as a firsthand witness to traditional, often violent methods of horse training and breaking the spirit with an abusive hand. Rejecting that, he went on to win nine world’s championships in the show ring. Today, Monty’s goal is to share his message that “Violence is never the answer.” Roberts has been encouraged by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and also by receiving the ASPCA “Founders” award and the MSPCA George T. Angell Humanitarian Award.
Join-Up® philosophies can be seen at work with both humans and horses across the world, from farms to major corporations. To learn more about Monty Roberts or the many applications of his Join-Up training methods, visitwww.MontyRoberts.com or contact debbie@montyroberts.com, 949-632-1856
Riding with Respect, May 24-26, 2010. HOURS: 9:45 am – 5 pm each day, lunch included. Mustang Free to good home only!
Mustang / Mustang mix (possibly Spanish Barb or Andalusian ancestry).
Bay, gelding. About 20-22 y/o. 15h.
Great comfy & ‘cushy’ ride. Always healthy, no injuries. Has incredible hoofs and bone!
Would make a great endurance horse due to comfort, energy, and ground covering stride.
Wilson is standing around getting bored because I cannot use him in my children’s outreach program.
My students have special needs and require a “DEAD BROKE” horse. Definately not Wilson!
I can’t afford to keep him as my program takes every dime I can find.
I have been working with Wilson, but I finally admit, he will never be a ‘lesson’ horse.
Wilson needs a confident rider as he is insecure.
He is getting cranky from not getting worked.
He would be a good companion horse because he is very social.
He loves to give and get attention. Please help me find a good home for him!

National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame Receives National Education Awards for Its Distance Learning Program
Fort Worth, Texas — The National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of Fame has received two national awards for its distance-learning program, the 2010-2011 Pinnacle Award from the Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (CILC) and the 2011 Teachers’ Choice Award from the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency for the second year in a row.
For the 2010-11 school year, the Cowgirl Museum was one of the 25 distance-learning providers in the United States to receive the coveted Pinnacle Award and the only recipient in Texas. This is the first year for the museum to receive the award, having received honorable mention in 2010.
Through its 26 distance-learning programs, the Cowgirl Museum reached 16,963 students in 2011 (a 75% increase over the last school year) via 435 distance-learning program sites— more than any other content provider through the Connect 2 Texas program, sponsored by the Texas Education Agency. The museum also provided 91 classes to students in other states and four classes to international audiences. Listed on the museum’s web site at http://www.cowgirl.net/ are the programs available to elementary and secondary schools and other organizations. Each program lasts 45 minutes. For information, contact Cindi Collins, school services director of the Cowgirl Museum, at 817-509-8697.
“We are extremely proud of our school services staff and programs” said Patricia Riley, the museum’s executive director. “These awards bring validation to what we already knew. Reaching out in this medium is a key part of our mission and deserves this recognition. This and the other educational services we offer will continue to grow.”
About the Pinnacle Award
The Center for Interactive Learning and Collaboration (http://www.cilc.org/), established in 1994, is an Indiana-based not-for-profit organization specializing in access to applications and the utilization of videoconferencing for live interactive content and professional development, as well as web-based collaborative learning environments for K-20 education. CILC provides consulting expertise in videoconferencing, integration, problem-based learning products, school-community partnerships and effective techniques for the delivery and development of quality programs.
The CILC’s Pinnacle Award is presented annually to organizations posting outstanding K-12 standards-based interactive videoconferencing programs to http://www.cilc.org/. To qualify for the award, the provider must receive a minimum 2.85 average score out of a possible 3 on its program evaluations from educators during the school year. The evaluation assesses seven areas, two related to the effectiveness of the presenter and five related to the educational content of the program. All content posted to http://www.cilc.org/ by Pinnacle Award winners is marked with the CILC flame.
About the Teachers’ Favorite Award

By Yellow Horse Marketing for HorseShow.com
HorseShow.com, the revolutionary online horse show site, announces the launch of its new Facebook game titled “Horse World”. This innovative game is designed for horse lovers as well as fans of simulation game by replicating the “real-life” activities of building farms, managing stables, and participating in equestrian training and competition.
Similar to other wildly-popular Facebook “farming” games, with the new Horse World game players cancreate customized virtual facilities, building farms with fully functional stables complete with pastures, barns, training venues, farm equipment and custom homes, and even create communities by inviting friends to build their own farms next door. Once stables are built, players can add horses and train them in the training venues to earn experience points, which are used to then compete in shows and races. Credits are earned in many ways including creating a business through boarding horses, hosting shows and/or races, as well selling facilities, equipment and/or horses. As in the “real” equestrian world, Horse World users can enjoy shopping for saddlery and equipment for their horses in the virtual tack store. Players also earn achievement ribbons and credits for completing tasks and progressing through levels, as well as earn points and reward good performances by their online horses by regularly “petting” their steeds.

New Hallmarq MRI at Alamo Pintado
Hallmarq Standing MRI Unit Joins Alamo Pintado
World-class equine medical center is first in the United States
to offer both standing and anesthetized equine MRI.
June 22, 2011; Los Olivos, CA — Hallmarq Veterinary Equine Imaging is proud to announce their standing MRI system has been selected to expand the extraordinary list of services offered by Alamo Pintado Equine Medical Center, one of the foremost equine medical centers in the world.
Some 4,000 horses come to Alamo Pintado each year, often as many as 30 arrive in just one day. Their owners come seeking treatment for a wide range of issues, from lameness to intestinal surgeries.
Alamo Pintado already offers a comprehensive list of medical diagnostics and therapies, including a traditional high-field MRI that requires full anesthesia. In fact, Alamo Pintado is the first in the United States, and only the second globally, to offer both high-field and standing equine MRI. Carter Judy, DVM DACVS of Alamo Pintado said, “Our guiding mantra here at Alamo Pintado is to offer choice to our clients, which means we must offer a complete array of all the available technology, so that the ‘care team’ of owner and veterinarians can collectively treat the individual horse in the way that best fits his or her problem and situation.” In regards to having two types of MRIs, Dr. Judy explained, “We see the standing and high-field MRIs as complementary, sometimes the high-field is a better choice, but oftentimes the standing MRI is, for a variety of reasons, including rechecks, health screenings for race and performance horses that have no specific lameness, and those with potential anesthesia risks due to age, breed, and overall health. Offering both types of MRIs was simply necessary to provide a truly comprehensive array of diagnostic tools for our clients.”
The Hallmarq MRI is an outpatient procedure, with sedation similar to that used for digital radiographs or other procedure requiring a horse to stand very still. Other MRI systems require full lay-down anesthesia, with its associated risks, but may provide advantages in certain cases such as those where the lameness is in higher joints, such as the stifle.
The ideal standing MRI case is where the problem has been localized to a specific region of the leg, and radiographs have not indicated a clear diagnosis. “The closer to the ground, the less sway in a standing horse’s limb, so hoof images are approaching 100% successful (98.5%), and fetlock images are close to that (96%) with our latest system,” explained Dan Brown, a veterinarian and Business Development Director for Hallmarq. “Regions higher up the leg can be imaged, but the results will be defined by how still the horse stays under sedation. To put another set of numbers to it, we see roughly 30% of radiographs able to give accurate foot diagnoses, whereas our standing MRI system offers triple that success rate at approximately 90%.” Dr. Brown concluded, “Alamo Pintado is a highly respected equine clinic, we are honored to be added to their array of diagnostic tools.”
For more information about Alamo Pintado, please visit alamopintado.com, or call (805) 688-6510.
For more information about Hallmarq standing MRIs, including finding the one nearest you, please visit hallmarq.net or call (978) 266-1219.
NEW HORSE-RELATED CHILDREN’S WRITING COMPETITION
Bowie, Md., – Aug 29, 2011 – American Horse Publications (AHP) member Valerie Ormond will be a sponsor and a judge for Voice For The Horse’s first children’s writing competition this fall. Ormond, author of Believing In Horses, invites AHP members who may have an interest in sharing the news of the competition with young writers, or who want to learn more about the project to visit 1st Annual Voice For The Horse Children’s Writing Competition ~ Subject Wild Horses.
The competition officially begins Oct 1, 2011, and runs through Dec 31, 2011, but the organization began pre-launch activity early to provide people time for thinking and research and to provide information to potential additional sponsors for this first-time competition.
This writing competition was inspired by Atticus, the Wild Stallion of Deadman Valley, British Columbia (B.C.), Canada who was captured in the winter of 2011 and rescued by CritterAid / Project Equus in the Interior of B.C. To create awareness for the wild horse populations of the United States and the preservation of them, Voice For The Horse contacted Saving America’s Mustangs, and founder Madeleine Pickens responded with great enthusiasm for the project. Theresa Nolet,CritterAid / Project Equus, also embraced the program and its effort to bring equine awareness to communities across the continent, to those both in and outside of the horse industry.
The competition provides unique, free, learning opportunities and the hope is that children will have the ability to share their love for horses across North America through their writing.

PATH Intl. Centers Mount Up for Summer
Denver—There’s magic in the air when days start getting longer and golden sunlight stretches well into the evening. Teachers and students alike sigh with longing for the approaching summer vacation.
Parents, though, are often less than excited about summer as they wonder how they can keep their kids entertained while helping them learn more than what is offered on daytime television. There is nothing like sitting astride a horse or working in a stable to reinforce lessons learned during the school year while also discovering new skills and hobbies, and summer is an excellent time to explore the physical, emotional and cognitive benefits of therapeutic horsemanship. PATH Intl. Centers across the country are beginning registration periods for summer sessions.
Many centers offer riding lessons throughout the summer. In addition to riding lessons, PATH Intl. Center summer camps—for both disabled and able-bodied participants—offer lessons on horse care and ground work. Nature exploration is always a fun activity in any camp. Many activities and games, such as obstacle courses, help riders improve their equestrian skills while gaining physical benefits, such as improving balance, coordination and posture, increasing flexibility, and building muscle and core strength.
Summer camps and lessons fill up quickly. Contact the center nearest you to register. Go to the PATH Intl. website and click on Find a Center. Search by state and by activity.
Summer is just around the corner, and the memories are waiting to happen.

PegasusTV will be in available in Bakersfield and Santa Barbara, California this week, according to Charles Smallwood, west coast Regional Manager for the new equestrian television network.
“Bakersfield’s KBCT 34.1 and Santa Barbara’s KSBT 32 will join Los Angeles and Fresno as part of our network’s planned regional “cluster” for central and southern California,” said Smallwood. “When the Montery/Salinas/Santa Cruz channel launches later this fall, PegasusTV will have established its first planned regional ‘hoofprint’ coverage for the state.”
The network’s fall program grid will be anchored by a wide variety of shows and series, starting off in August with a fascinating, exclusive interview with Alltech’s CEO, Dr. Pearse Lyons, taped just prior to that company’s official announcement of its major sponsorship of the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games Normandy 2014 in France. “The Game Changer: Dr. Pearse Lyons” will air beginning the week of August 8, and is the first of many up-close-and-personal visits with major industry personalities planned for the coming year.
Included in the program mix will be series from trainers, clinicians and other horsemen and women of note representing equestrian knowledge and knowhow representing over 75 years of film and video. Ranging from some of today’s more popular and well-known personalities to those from “out of the past” whose contributions were – and are — just as viable and important to the industry, the network’s “SmartHorse/ SmartRider” program category will cover many aspects of equestrian activities and disciplines.
An integral part of the program grid will be documentaries from around the world, providing enlightening and informative entertainment. From travel series which explore the world on horseback to Robert Vavra’s “Such is the Real Nature of Horses,” the poetically beautiful, extraordinary cinematographic essay on equine communication and familial relationships of horses living beyond the interference of man, the network will strive to present outstanding programs which both educate and inform while also entertaining the viewer.
Feature films and Saturday morning “serials” from the 1920′s through today’s blockbusters will also be available, as will ongoing veterinary and horse husbandry series, and a wide variety of magazine-format shows featuring regional personalities and localized equestrian and horse “happenings.”
Late fall will see the beginning of regularly scheduled news broadcasts, programs covering the economics and issues impacting the industry today, competitions and events and even home shopping. The programming will be presented in rotating and repeating 4, 6 or 8 hour blocks which are designed for the active and busy equestrian lifestyle.
The network has begun dialogs with companies for long-term co-branding and sponsorships in multiple categories, from trucks, trailers and tractors to feed supplements, online retailers, print publications and even non-equestrian related categories such as travel and lodging, and welcomes inquiries regarding the numerous opportunities available.
Inquiries and proposals of all kinds are invited, and the network looks forward to working with all organizations in providing no-cost national television air time for competitions, shows, clinics and other equestrian events.
Pegasus Television Network is a 24/7 digital television network dedicated to equestrian pursuits and country life being syndicated coast to coast in local television markets.
Boot Media LLC is the parent company and managing member of Pegasus Television Network LLC. It is a privately-held company that develops and operates consumer media destinations and products focused on equestrian and equine-focused activities and country lifestyles across multiple delivery platforms. It also provides domestic and international distribution services for equestrian home media and television programming.

Pilot Study Examines Effectiveness Of Horse-Based Learning
LEXINGTON, Ky., (April 24, 2012) – In May, the University of Kentucky Center for Leadership Development will be launching a six-month pilot study to provide preliminary data on the effectiveness of collaborating with horses to teach emotional intelligence and leadership competencies, a process known as Equine Guided Leadership Education.
The study is a collaborative endeavor between nursing researchers from UK HealthCare and social science researchers from the Center for Leadership Development, which is part of the UK College of Agriculture and under the leadership of Director Patricia Dyk. The long-range goal will be to secure future funding for larger research projects.
There is an abundance of anecdotal evidence that suggests experiential learning with horses is effective at building competencies, said Lissa Pohl, the center’s co-investigator and project lead. “However, for this promising field to become even more credible in the eyes of those who want to utilize this powerful learning method, there needs to be academic research conducted and published in peer-reviewed journals showing this to be the case.”
The study will compare the before and after emotional intelligence (EQ) assessments of both a control group and an experimental group of up to 15 nurses each. Researchers will also examine qualitative surveys of those in the experimental group who will experience a one-day equine-guided learning workshop designed to increase their EQ skills at work. The basic premise of equine-guided education is that horses are natural coaches, with an innate ability to interpret and mirror human behavior. Equine-assisted learning experiences are professionally facilitated horse-human interactions and exercises geared to helping people develop insights that can be applied in the workplace and in their personal lives.
Winning With Horse Power, a Florida-based global umbrella organization of equine experiential providers, is partnering with the center to assist in publicizing the research and raising funds for the study.
“Supporting this pilot study is a perfect fit for us,” says Eileen Tighe, president and CEO of Winning With Horse Power. “Our members around the world are in many different specializations, but using equine-guided experiences to develop emotional intelligence is integral to all of them.”

Reiki Clinic at the Wagner Ranch
This Saturday, March 12th, noon-3pm
Reiki is an ancient Japanese hands-on healing technique. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words: Rei meaning “Universal Life Force” and Ki meaning “Energy”. It is administered by a “laying on of hands” in which the practitioner becomes the conduit for the energy which flows to the receiving person or animal.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, harmony and wellbeing, Many have reported miraculous results.
A Word About Christina – Christina has practiced Reiki on people for several years. She has recently discovered that animals were “calling upon her” for assistance. Combining reiki with her innate intuitive abilities has allowed her to be more receptive to “hear” and “see” the thoughts and pictures your pet may have regarding health issues, behavioral problems, etc…. This has helped her clients obtain a more harmonious and healthy relationship with their pet and with themselves.

Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day 2012
What is Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day 2012?
In 2010, Riders4Helmets hosted the first national event designed to educate equestrians on the benefits of wearing a properly fitting, secured and certified helmet. The event brought equestrian retailers and helmet manufacturers together, to help educate their customers on topics such as correct helmet fit and why wearing a helmet is important, and the helmet manufacturers could offer support by providing a special discount on their helmets. Riders4Helmets National Helmet Awareness Day 2010 was a huge success, with over 300 U.S.-based retailers and eight helmet manufacturers participating.
Building on that success, Riders4Helmets expanded the event globally in 2011. Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day 2011 received support from 10 helmet manufacturers and more than 500 equestrian retailers in the USA, Canada, Australia and the United Kingdom.
Riders4Helmets aims to grow the global growth of this years’ event by attracting equestrian retailers from European countries outside of the U.K., as well as equestrian retailers in New Zealand. This year Riders4Helmets will have printed educational materials available to both participating retailers and equestrians who wish to educate others on helmet use. Helmet manufacturers and retailers who are interested in participating in the event may email admin@riders4helmets.com to express their interest and will then be directed to a retailer registration page.
Riders4Helmets will host a series of live educational webinars on Riders4Helmets.com during the 2012 Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day. The webinars will feature a variety of experts in: Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussion; Psychologists; Neuro Physiotherapists; Helmet Manufacturers (tips on correctly fitting a helmet); Traumatic Brain Injury Survivors; Leading Equestrians etc. Viewers will be able to ask “real-time” questions to these experts. Details of who the experts will be, along with the topics that they will discuss, will be available nearer the date.
How can you help?
The more you write, blog, post, tweet and, in general, share the details of International Helmet Awareness Day with equestrians in the build up to the event … the more people will have an opportunity to get educated on the benefits of wearing a helmet. Your sharing information on the event with others might just save a life.
Logos, photographs and quotes for Riders4Helmets International Helmet Awareness Day 2012 may be obtained by emailing chad@riders4helmets.
com .How will equestrians know which retailers are participating?
From May 20th, 2012 a list of participating retailers sorted by country (and state) will be available to equestrians exclusively on Rid
ers4Helmets.com . Equestrians are encouraged to visit the Riders4Helmets website on a regular basis for updates with regard to the event.Advertising/Sponsorship
For advertising and sponsorship opportunities related to International Helmet Awareness Day 2012 please email chad@riders4helmets.com. Examples of opportunities include banner advertising on the Riders4Helmets website and company/product logo on print literature to be distributed to equestrians clubs/organizations (no logo’s will be placed on retailer literature unless non-conflicting). Riders4Helmets is entirely self-funded and any support is greatly appreciated to allow the campaign to continue to host Safety Symposiums and grow globally.
How can equestrians get involved?
If a club or organization is interested in hosting their own event to celebrate the day, they may email admin@riders4helmets.com
. We can send interested parties a list of literature and promotional materials (such as education CD’s) that will be available for purchase at a small charge (to cover our costs). We will be happy to help promote any event by posting details of it on the Riders4Helmets.com and on our Facebook and Twitter pages. Equestrians are encouraged to take lots of photos of their event and write up a short description of what they did, and who participated. This will then be included as a feature article on the Riders4Helmets campaign website. About Riders4Helmets
Riders4Helmets was founded in early 2010 after Olympic dressage rider Courtney King-Dye was seriously injured in a riding accident. King-Dye, who remained in a coma for a month following her accident, was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and continues to undergo rehabilitation. The goal of the Riders4Helmets Campaign is to educate equestrians on the benefits of wearing a properly fitted and secured, certified helmet. For more information on the Riders4Helmets campaign, visit riders4helmets.com. You can also follow the campaign at www.facebook.com/riders4helmets and http://twitter.com/riders4helmets .

South County Group Chiro Appointments

“My daughter’s barrel horse needs chiro treatments about every 6 weeks. We found a great chiropractor in Paso who is willing to schedule some visits to South County if there are 4-5 horses. His rates are very reasonable based on what I’ve heard from other people who get their horses treated. I’m wondering if there are other Ride Nipomo members who would be interested. I would be willing to coordinate a day for him to come down.”

Stolen Quarter Horse Mare
Stolen Quarter Horse Mare – April 17, 2011
Mary Jo Battilana had her 14 year old Quarter Horse mare stolen and we are trying to get the word out to anyone involved with horses in CA and NV.
Sunday morning, April 17, 2011, between 12:00 midnight and 5:00 a.m. someone cut the chain link pasture fencing and stole “Jackie”, a 14 year old, 14.3 hand, true black Quarter Horse mare. She has a white narrow strip down her face and three varying size white socks. The pasture was located on Gerber Road in South Sacramento, CA. Jackie recently had her feet trimmed and is barefoot. She also has a fresh wound on her right hind leg. It is a scrape wound down to raw flesh on the cannon bone. She is bonded with a gelding buddy in her pasture, so unless she is sedated she is screaming/calling for him constantly. She is very good looking mare and is a trained stock horse, so someone may have wanted her for rodeo or barrel racing/gymkhana.
Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department took a criminal report on the theft.
Report number is #11-80619.
Please call Mary Jo Battilana at 916-764-8080 if you have any questions or information.

PLEASE DO NOT USE CLOSED TRAILS.
All trails in San Luis Obispo have been hammered in the rain! The ground is scoured and saturated. Please give wet trails time to dry out before going for a hike, bike, or gallop. Staying off wet trails until they have time to dry out for a couple of days will prevent additional damage from occurring.
We will update all trail conditions on our SLO Trail Updates and Information site. You can sign up on that site for email updates on trail conditions. http://groups.google.com/group/cccmb-trail-info-and-updates

Trail Ride at Montaña de Oro
Trail Ride Competition at Live Oak Camp/Lake Cachuma in November
Santa Ynez, California – October 7, 2011 – The Santa Ynez Valley Arabian Horse Association (SYVAHA) is now accepting registrations for the 2011 Sage Hill All Breed Competitive Trail Ride. The ride will take place November 4 through 6 at Live Oak Camp off Highway 154 near Lake Cachuma.
“The Sage Hill Ride attracts riders ranging in age from 10 to 70,” said Kathy Stegman, Sage Hill ride manager. “This year we are particularly excited about the increase in participation by junior riders. Nipomo 4-H, for example, is bringing 10 riders. Other 4-H groups have also expressed an interest and those riders are currently looking for sponsors to help with entry fees.” SYVAHA gives a 20 percent discount on entry fees for groups of 10 or more.
Sanctioned by the North American Trail Conference, the Sage Hill ride features open, competitive pleasure and novice divisions. Open riders cover 50 to 60 miles in the two-day period, and competitive pleasure and novice riders cover 35 to 40 miles. A one-day novice ride covers approximately 23 miles. There is also a 12-mile introductory ride for people who want to learn more about the sport of competitive trail riding and camping with your horse, but don’t want to go the full 20+ miles the first time out.
The trail leads riders through spectacular scenery at the eastern end of the Santa Ynez Valley, offering water crossings, sandy washes and other challenges that enable riders to improve their horsemanship skills. Experienced judges score riders on the way they handle and care for their horses and how well they negotiate natural trail obstacles. Veterinary judges score horses on condition and the ability to complete this rigorous ride. Riders receive copies of their scorecards so they can understand their strengths and weaknesses and improve their skills.
SYVAHA is seeking sponsorships and donations to help cover the costs of the event as well as sponsors for 4-H riders. Please contact the following people for sponsorships and donations:
• Ride sponsorships: Sylvia Beverly, 805-688-2000
• Silent auction items: Sylvia Beverly, 805-688-2000
• 4-H rider sponsorships: Kathy Stegman, 805-710-4471 (kkstegman@cs.com).
The organization is also seeking volunteers to work at pulse and respiration (P&R) checkpoints, to assist judges in recording points for horse health and horsemanship or to just bring a book and be a gate opener. If you would like to volunteer, contact Kathy Stegman at 805-710-4471 or kkstegman@cs.com.
For ride entry forms online, visit http://www.syvaha.com/, click on and print the forms. Call Kathy Stegman at 805-710-4471 (kkstegman@cs.com) or Anne Plucy at 805 688-2912 (trail.ryder2@verizon.net) for more information or to request forms by mail.

Trail Work at Santa Margarita Lake
Trail Work at Santa Margarita Lake (backside – River Road Entrance) – Saturday, April 23
Kathy Redden is organizing this quick trail work session and would appreciate everyone who can help out.
One crew will do tread work on the section of single track before the creek crossing. All others will ride out to horse camp and tie up. This second crew will focus on brush trimming from the road to horse camp, and from horse camp towards boy scout camp.
For those who do brush trimming: It’s important to cut back to the original trail. All brush should be tucked under brush or in open spaces — don’t throw it over the top of the brush as it looks awful when it dies.
The crew that does tread work: You won’t need horses to work on the tread, but you’re welcome to bring them and ride out to help do trim (or just to have fun) if we get done with the tread work before the brushing crew comes back.
Actual work will be two hours maximum. We will have bbq hot dogs and some sort of salad back in the parking lot. If you want to bring a potluck item, that would be great.
Please be ready to ride/walk out at 10am.
Trail tools and loppers will be provided.
Bring water and hand clippers, and wear long sleeves.
Please call to RSVP.
Thank you!

This year attendees will have the opportunity to test drive a new Dodge or Ford truck — and even try one with a new Sundowner trailer attached!
Friday’s spotlight includes the final competition of the Magnificent 7 stock horse challenge, along with the awarding of the 2011 Horse Expo Hall of Fame honor to Bob Avila.
On Saturday afternoon Dave Hammond will be bringing down the gavel on the sales of 120+ quality horses, including the 2007 colt that Richard Winters rode in the 2010 Road to the Horse competition. On Saturday night, wonderful aromas will be wafting from the Santa Fe Barbecue in the Wrangler Arena, where diners can spend their evening with clinicians in an up-close-and-personal setting.
Singer Templeton Thompson will perform at the barbecue too, making it a perfect evening.
Kids will be in their glory at the Young Rider Park, where activities will be available all day, including fingerpainting live grey Arabian horses!
For these three exciting days, folks will have a once-a- year opportunity to shop for everything they can imagine, from trailers, trucks, tractors, barns, clothing, boots and saddles — and so much more. Many of the clinicians will have their DVDs and customized tack at their booths too.
So find your way to sunny California and enjoy the 13th annual Western States Horse Expo!

Winter driving tips for horse owners
LEXINGTON, Ky. (Nov. 14, 2011) – With the change of seasons, USRider – the national provider of roadside emergency assistance for equestrians – reminds those who travel with horses to be careful when traveling and invest time doing routine preventive trailer maintenance to enhance their travel safety.
It is imperative to make sure your vehicle is ready for winter driving. Be sure to maintain your vehicle according to the manufacturer’s service schedule. It’s also important to take your vehicle to a trusted mechanic.
“When it comes to vehicle maintenance, especially heavy-duty vehicles towing precious cargo, it is better to be proactive than reactive,” said Bill Riss, general manager of USRider. “If you have not already done so, establish a relationship with a trusted ASE (http://www.ase.com/) mechanic. It is essential that you do this before your vehicle breaks down on the side of the highway while towing your horse trailer.”
USRider recommends that you check tire pressure before each trip. This is especially important with temperature changes. If you are traveling from a warm climate to a cold climate, air pressure in your tires will drop. On the other hand, when traveling from a cold climate into a warm climate, the air pressure will rise.
A weak battery will usually reveal itself during cold weather. If your battery is more than a couple of years old, be sure to check it prior to cold weather setting in. Otherwise, you will most likely be inconvenienced on some cold morning when the battery fails to start your vehicle.
When driving, a good rule of thumb to follow on the road is “rain, ice & snow – take it slow.” Before setting out on a trip, take the time to check weather reports and plan accordingly. Be sure to allow extra time for inclement weather. Mother Nature doesn’t care that you need to be somewhere at a certain time.
Always drive with your headlights on during inclement weather – even if it is not dark. USRider recommends that horse owners drive with headlights on anytime when trailering horses, regardless of weather, because of increased visibility afforded by using headlights.
Also during inclement weather, be sure to increase distance between vehicles to allow more stopping time. USRider recommends that you double the normal distance between vehicles when towing a horse trailer.
“Stopping on snow or ice without skidding and/or jackknifing takes extra distance. Use brakes very gently to avoid skidding,” added Riss. “If you begin to skid or jackknife, ease up on the brake and steer into the skid to regain control.”
During winter months, traction tires are recommended. In order to qualify as a traction tire, tires must have at least an eighth of an inch of tread and be labeled Mud and Snow, M+S, All-Season, or have a Mountain/Snowflake symbol. Since tire performance can vary, a trusted area dealer may be able to advise you on the best tires for your vehicle.
Since it’s difficult to know what road conditions you may encounter during the winter, make it a practice to re-fuel when your vehicle fuel gauge drops below the halfway mark. In many states, you can dial 5-1-1 for travel conditions and road closures.
In some states, vehicles over 10,000 gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), including some passenger trucks, SUVs, RVs, and vehicles towing trailers, must carry chains on certain highways November 1 through March 31. Check with the Department of Transportation or Department of Motor Vehicles for information on the states you will be traveling through.

Work Day on National Trails Day
For National Trails Day, SLO County Parks is hosting a trail work day at Santa Margarita Lake on June 5. Meet at the White Oak area at the front side to Santa Margarita Lake from 9 to 12. Trail work will be done on Grey Pine Trail. Central Coast Concerned Mountain Bikers (3CMB) will be bringing out tools. Wear long sleeves and bring water for yourself. Jim Patterson, County Supervisor for North County, will be in participating, so it’s important that members from local horse clubs attend to get good “face time.” A bbq will be held after the trail work. Please RSVP to ECOSLO by May 30 at 544-1777 or info@ecoslo.org so that enough food can be purchased.
